P7 Sportshall Athletics

Our Sports Leaders recently hosted  our first transition event of the year, the P7 Sportshall Athletics!

The event was held over two days with attendance from all of our partner primaries.  On each day over 160 P7 pupils attended the events and our Sports Leaders led them through a number of activity stations that they themselves had designed and were entirely in control of.

The days were a resounding success with our senior pupils excelling themselves, epitomising the standards that Duncanrig instils in them.  They were supported on both days by our School Captains, Sports Captains and Sports Vice Captains who did a fantastic job in assisting with the delivery of the event.

The P7 pupils told us that they had a “brilliant day” and were excited about taking part in activities in Duncanrig as it helped them in their journeys from P7 into S1

Recognition of Outstanding Duncanrig Sports Volunteers!

Sport

Every school term, South Lanarkshire Active Schools put forward nominations for local volunteers to be recognised for their contribution to sport locally.  I am happy to say that 2 of our senior pupil volunteers have been recognised this term for their outstanding contributions to our school, our partner primaries and our wider community.

CLUB COACH – Cat Crichton (East Kibride Rugby club)

Cat has been actively promoting rugby opportunities through delivering regular rugby curriculum tasters  in 5 of our partner primaries as well as leading lunchtime clubs in all of these.  Cat has also continued to support the girls rugby squad here at Duncanrig.  She has delivered over 50 hours of coaching in and been involved in various school-based events; Active Girls Weeks, Sports Fayre and Health Day events.   Cat’s role has been to showcase rugby and promote a pathway from the school environment into the community club setting.  Thus far, she has supported the transition of a number of primary pupils into joining East Kilbride Rugby club to continue their rugby journey.

SENIOR PUPIL – Samantha Callaghan

Early in term 1, Samantha was successful with her application to become our Female Sports Captain.  This role has seen Samantha involved in numerous events within our school.  She has committed her time toward supporting the planning and delivery of the Sports Fayre, Active Girls events as well as presenting at our formal School Sport Awards presentation.   Samantha is also a part of the East Kilbride Sports Coach Academy programme.  This has seen her take part in various coaching courses and gain invaluable experience coaching at a P3-P4 after-school multi-sports club at East Milton Primary over a 6 week period to 25 energetic pupils.   Samantha also volunteers at East Milton PS leading the school netball team preparing them for monthly netball festivals.   She also undertakes coaching duties at her senior netball team outwith school and is always eager to learn and develop her skills.

Well done to both pupils.

Duncanrig Secondary awarded Gold School status by sportScotland

School Sports Awards - GOLD - 2017

We are delighted to announce that we have once again been awarded gold school status by sportScotland. This is a prestigious national award for innovation and achievement in delivering physical education and extra-curricular sport.

As part of the National Lottery funded programme, the sportScotland School Sport Award is a national initiative that is designed to encourage schools to continuously improve physical education and sport. The Award also encourages sporting links between schools and the communities around them.

Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of sportScotland, said: “Congratulations to all the staff and pupils at Duncanrig Secondary – they should be extremely proud of this fantastic achievement. Not only have they put physical education and sport at the heart of their school and local community, but they have managed to do so in a way that encourages all pupils to engage in physical activity whilst having fun at the same time. The fact that the award is being made again to the school is testimony to the ongoing and sustained commitment of the staff to maintaining excellence.”

To achieve a Bronze or Silver sportScotland School Sport Award, schools self-assess their current practice. However, to gain Gold status an extensive external assessment is also carried out by an independent panel of experts.

George Wynne, Head Teacher, commented: “It is an honour to be awarded the sportScotland Gold School Sport Award for the second time. Our staff work incredibly hard to deliver an outstanding range and quality of sporting opportunities, physical activities around dance, gymnastics and exericse and outdoor learning experience to our pupils.  We believe that physical education, physical activity, sport and outdoor learning are integral parts of our school curriculum which benefit all learners.”

The sportScotland School Sport Award is supported by the Active Schools Network, a programme that involves sportScotland working in partnership with all 32 local authorities to encourage schools to ensure there are opportunities for all children and young people to engage, participate and reach their potential in this area.

The on-line self-assessment tool supports schools to achieve this by helping them to reflect on their current practice and identify areas for improvement. It also puts the young people in the school at the forefront of the decision making and implementation processes around sport in their school.
