S1 Return to School

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you and your family are well and your child is looking forward to their first day with us at Duncanrig Secondary on Wednesday.  I realise that many of our new S1 will be feeling a little nervous, particularly given the current circumstances, so I wanted to detail what the first day will involve for them.

On Wednesday only S1 pupils and S6 pupils will be in school which will mean that it is much quieter than usual.  School begins at 8.55am and all S1 pupils are asked to come in via their new entrance at the door at the end of wing D.  This leads into the English corridor where the transition event was held. Click on the link below for a map of the school.

I will be at the entrance to welcome the pupils along with my colleagues from Pupil Support who helped to run the transition event in June.  This should ensure some familiar faces for the pupils who were able to attend this event.  Pupils will be directed to the Street area and shown where their registration classroom is by staff.  If pupils are unsure of their registration class we will help them with this.

On arrival at their registration class, pupils will meet the rest of their classmates and their registration teacher.  They will spend the first two periods with their register teacher for an induction session.  Timetables will be issued and clear guidelines on new health and safety procedures will be explained. Pupils will also be issued with data forms for you to complete and pin numbers to buy food from the canteen.  They will also meet their Pupil Support teacher.

Pupils will then have a break in their S1 designated area of the school. They will have access to an indoor area and the outdoor courtyard area.  I will be there to supervise pupils along with my colleagues.  Snacks will be available from the canteen and pupils can bring their own snacks too.  Please note we cannot use our vending machines or water fountains at the moment so pupils will need to bring their own water or purchase some from the canteen.

After break pupils will begin to follow their new timetable.  They will have one subject for a double period before lunch.  Lunch will be from 12.45 – 1.30pm in the designated S1 area where pupils can eat their packed lunches or access the canteen. Please note S1 pupils are not permitted to leave school at lunchtime.  After lunch pupils will again follow their new timetable and attend the double period of the subject on their timetable.

When pupils return on Thursday they will follow their new timetable.

Information on Parent Pay has already been issued to parents.  You will need to set this up and load money on to this before pupils will be able to use their pin number to buy food at the canteen.  An allowance will automatically be added for pupils in receipt of free school meals.  Please note the canteen cannot accept cash.  If you have any queries about Parent Pay please contact the school office.

There is further information on our school re-opening on the school website but I thought it may be useful for you to have an outline of what the day will look like for our S1 pupils to discuss with your child.  We are very much looking forward to welcoming all the children on Wednesday and helping them get back into a routine and settle in.

Thanks very much for your support.

Yours faithfully,
