Debating Cup1

Congratulations to sixth year pupils Kate Kane and Alison Balmer who have talked their way to outstanding success by reaching the final of the Scullion Law Debating Competion.  This prestigious competition is competed for by pupils all over Lanarkshire and the girls have done tremendously well to reach the final.

When asked to comment on their progress so far and their thoughts of performing in the final at the Banqueting Hall of SLC Headquarters in front of an invited audience, Alison remarked: “We’re really honoured to take part in the final which we are approaching with a mixture of excitement and nerves.”  Kate added: “We’re looking forward to debating the other team, but also apprehensive about facing their eloquence.”

Our best wishes go to the girls as their preparations enter the final stages.

Congratulations to S6 pupils, Bryan Watson and Zak Williamson who went through to the second round of the Donald Dewar Law Society Debating competition. This was the first formal debate for both boys and they acquitted themselves very well against more experienced opposition. They argued that monuments to controversial figures should be removed from public places – not an easy topic for either side to argue, but they made their case convincingly.

Mention should be made of Emma Carfrae and Abby Cassidy (both S5) who performed very strongly and were excellent representatives of our school. Although they didn’t go through to round 2 they remain undaunted andy are keen to do it all again as soon as possible!
